Prores RAW vs cDNG

Since Davinci 20.2 will add ProRes RAW support and has problems with cDNG demosaic:

  1. If Pixboom is going to add Prores to the camera anyway, maybe internal Prores RAW is possible?

  2. Maybe the opportunity to use Pixboom Cine App to transcode to Prores RAW next to cDNG?

I think there is quite a cost associated with Prores being an Apple owned codec. Prores raw is a pretty awesome codec though I definitely wouldn’t say no!

First prize would be native support for the Pixboom raw codec in Resolve and Assimilate Scratch and more.

As far as I know Pixboom licensed ProRes already and is going to implement into the spark. Maybe this is the route to go?

Native support would be lovely, but we all know how long it took Blackmagic to implement Prores Raw … A “well known” Codec

There have been different RAW flavours from Brands like Kinefinity and Z-Cam which never made their way into Resolve.

  1. Maybe the demosaic problem with Resolve can be solved on the software side of Pixbooms app?

  2. Additional Prores RAW conversion in the App is of course welcomed

  3. Maybe a plug-in for Davinci and others to implement and use Pixboom raw as is, like the UI of the Pixboom Cine App? This would save time in Editing

  4. Maybe internal Prores RAW recording is possible with the license?

Hey, these are some fantastic points. Let’s break them down:

  1. You’re spot on. The demosaic issue can be solved directly within the Pixboom app. Here’s a quick look at the results we’re getting:
(You can see the image at the bottom)
  2. Adding a ProRes RAW conversion option to the app is an excellent idea! When exporting, this would give you an additional option to save the raw domain data. We’re very familiar with standard ProRes, but ProRes RAW is a new beast for us. We will try to open up a discussion with Apple about it.
  3. A plugin for DaVinci and other NLEs is absolutely a direction we want to pursue. The main challenge is that it depends heavily on the development schedules of those third-party software companies, we are actively trying to make it happen.
  4. As for internal ProRes RAW recording… that’s a massive engineering undertaking and a whole different level of complexity.

Thanks for the great suggestions!

We managed with getting Kinefinity native support in Assimilate Scratch which was a game changer for me as I still have the Kinemini 4k. I reached out to the some time ago to Assimilate and they expressed their willingness to work with Pixboom and visited them at IBC. Let me know if you need me to help start that conversation again. More software to buy but might be worth it if it becomes an option.

I managed to play with the Pixboom conversion app and a raw files or two and it works really well already surprisingly. Was running Apple silicon and it worked great.
