Will we have the ability to cut and trim a file recorded in camera to free up space as we shoot?
This is a very good question. As far as I know, many cinema cameras do not support deleting individual clips in-camera, only full media formatting. This is a habit tied to professional workflows, aimed at avoiding accidental deletion of footage.
However, I’d like to hear everyone’s suggestions—I think this is indeed a topic worth discussing. At the very least, we could enable the option to save an interesting segment as a new clip without deleting the original footage. While this wouldn’t free up space, it may improve workflow efficiency.
That would be very useful to make another short clip from longer clip. So there’s no way to delete files in camera?
Formatting the card is a better option because it ensures the maximum write bandwidth of the card. If you rely on deleting files over time to free up space, it can create fragmented files, which will affect the write speed of cards (this is determined by objective physical laws). ![]()
Understood sir!
I second being able to save a portion of a clip as a new clip within the camera. This would speed up workflow tremendously in the field!
We can save new clips from a clip but looks like we can’t delete the older clip which won’t help save space in the field.
Yeah, I’m pretty used to that. It’s the same for most cinema cameras and on my REDs.
But being able to just create a shorter clip of just what I need will allow me to save loads of time scanning through footage, and also allowing me to save and backup only what I need when data wrangling.
As an experienced high speed camera user, I assumed in-camera trimming was available. Phantoms, iX, Photrons, NACs all have it, and frankly, I would be very hampered without it. Saving thousands of frames of worthless footage that surrounds an event of interest is time-consuming, resource consuming and error-prone. Please consider this as an essential!
On the Phantoms, did you have the ability to delete the original footage after saving the trimmed clip?
The clip is initially saved to RAM. You can playback/replay the clip in camera and trim it if necessary. You then save just the trimmed file to a Cinemag or CF card etc. Or, you can save the entire clip to the Cinemag or CF file - it depends on your usage scenario.
Got you. So Pixboom Spark most likely won’t let you be able to delete old file after saving a new clip because it doesn’t record to RAM like other systems then.
Perhaps it could be implemented if formatting is done regularly?
I believe the concern is because of fragmented files.
