Field notes from real-world use (wildlife filming + a high-speed drifting competition)

After real world use, here’s a few updates that would help operators. I am on the latest update of the camera as of 8-7-2026.

1. Let Fn keys map to a metric, not a single direction. Right now each Fn key can only be assigned to one function — e.g. ISO+ or ISO-. That eats up both Fn keys just to cover ISO in both directions, which leaves nothing free to hotkey WB+ or WB-, Etc.. 

A potential fix, assign each Fn key to a metric (ISO, WB, shutter, etc.), then use the scroll wheel to move that metric up and down. That way a single Fn key controls a full metric bidirectionally instead of one key per direction.

2. Add single-tap / double-tap to widen how many metrics an operator can reach. There still aren’t enough Fn keys for everything to be changed quickly. Idea: single-tap = first metric, double-tap = second metric. For example, Fn1 single-tap → ISO (scroll to adjust), Fn1 double-tap → WB (scroll to adjust). Fn2 gets its own single-tap and double-tap pair too. That doubles the metrics an operator can jump between on the fly.

3. Deletion of clips from the SSD in-camera. At the drifting competition I repeatedly triggered recording by accident. Somehow I would bump the record while in pre-record and operating in handheld. It shaved several seconds of unwanted footage. With no way to delete those in-camera, my SSD filled up far sooner than it should have, forcing me to call it a day as this was a fast paced competition and I was a solo operator without a media drop location. In-camera clip deletion would fix this. If someone was worried about unwanted deletion, we could do a “hold for 5 seconds” feature or have a deletion option deep in the user settings requiring a password to unlock this for the camera and an ability to lock it back if you were to use it on a set with a crew you didn’t trust. For security and usability, this sounds like the best of both worlds. 

4. Make the playback scroll wheel accelerate. The scroll-through-playback feature is welcome, but it’s slow. Speeding it up, or better, accelerating as you keep scrolling quickly would make it much more usable.

5. Aperture UI is misleading on lenses the body can’t control. The UI lets a user set aperture to any value the lens offers, which is great in theory. But with something like a zoom lens, the camera never actually changes the aperture on it’s display. Mechanically the lenses F stop goes up with zoomed on certain lenses, but there’s no live feedback in camera.

6. DJI Lidar. The Lidar system could be the perfect combo with the Pixboom for autofocus work + a 1st AC. I rigged my system with it the other day, and it’s truly incredible for pulling focus quickly. The Record button on the DJI Lidar handle doesn not connect to the pixboom via bluetooth and I have not found a solution for the record button to work. Could engineers look into making this work? single tap with pre-rec turned on in camera, tap again for rec, tap after that cancels recording, and lastly a hold with the rec button would cancel a pre-record. That’s the protocal already used b y the pixboom spark on the other rec buttons so we just push it to the lidar system.
