KS Update 1: Sprinting Towards Mass Production! Quieter, Tougher, and a Few Surprises

Thank you for the update. We’re glad to hear that the newsletter with detailed information will be sent on January 8th. This reinforces our confidence that the announced schedule is being followed and that shipments for early buyers remain on track for January, as previously communicated. Looking forward to the update.

And, just for context, here was the full comment Pixboom made over there:

Let’s hope. Nothing certain yet. It could be pushed back to February or March. Still hoping for January.

It may slip slightly, but that would need to be very carefully evaluated, especially since the original timeline was communicated with what sounded like a 99% confidence level of meeting the schedule.

Additionally, I believe many people are waiting for these cameras to carry out paid work. If January was presented as the target, it’s reasonable to assume that every possible effort is being made to meet that timeline.

The process update itself was very likely delayed intentionally in order to share as much concrete and complete information as possible. In one of the comments I read and responded to, February was mentioned as a possibility, but I personally believe that by beginning of February all units will have been shipped.

If the ship date needs to slip a bit to make sure the hardware is all sorted out and the best it can be, I’d much rather wait a little longer than be faced with lesser hardware or the need to return the camera for an upgrade and/or fix. Software can easily be updated, but not hardware.

While I have a project this month I’d like to use it on, I never base a project off of equipment I don’t have or that isn’t out yet, for exactly this reason. I’ll make do with the 240fps on my Sony or borrow/rent an Ember if I don’t get the Spark in time.

Of course, this is all speculation at this point and the newsletter may say everything’s great and on time and that they’re shipping all the pre-orders this month. Guess we’ll find out in a few days.

Yes, I agree. Although it would be great for them to ship this month, I’d rather they make sure everything is all set and tidy.

I completely understand and agree that hardware quality should always come first, and no one wants to deal with returns or hardware fixes after delivery.

At the same time, the January timeline was communicated with a very high level of confidence, and many early buyers are clearly planning around that expectation, especially for professional work. I’ve read many comments from users who are hoping the camera arrives as soon as possible so they can include it in projects that are starting or already underway, and that’s certainly my case as well. I have a course and a few ongoing jobs where it would make complete sense to have the camera in hand by the end of January or early February.

Of course, every situation is different. I do have a Freefly, which helps in many scenarios, but it’s really not comparable to what we’re about to have with the Spark. That’s why, if January was presented as the target, it’s reasonable to assume that every possible effort is being made to stay within that window if at all feasible. Hopefully the January 8th newsletter will clarify whether everything is on track or if a slight adjustment is truly necessary.

Looks like I was right. If you read the new newsletter, it’s getting pushed back till March at least as of now. Probably also due to Chinese New Year in February.
