Not a pro filmmaker here—just a gal who loves playing around with slow-mo for fun. I shoot on my Sony RX100 a lot, but it never quite turns out the way I imagined. You know, stuff like my cat doing epic jumps or watching corn pop into fluffy popcorn (oddly satisfying, lol).
Anyway, I swung by the Pixboom booth earlier at the NAB show, and it’s seriously an eye candy. Finally, something that doesn’t scream “only for big-budget productions” or at least that’s what they said. But here’s the kicker—they were super vague about the price.
Anyone wanna take a guess? Is this finally gonna be the slow-mo cam we can actually afford?
From what I know, high-speed cameras are typically very expensive—usually start at around $20k. The Pixboom prototype they showcased seems to offer even more features, with rich connectivity and a workflow that fits perfectly with my needs as a cinematographer. Honestly, if it’s priced similarly to other high-speed cameras, I’d already be thrilled to get my hands on one.
That said, I totally get where you’re coming from! I really hope Pixboom can shake up the industry the way Blackmagic did, making slow-mo imaging accessible to creators everywhere. It could spark a positive cycle—more affordable gear leading to more creative projects, and ultimately, a shift in the filmmaking landscape. Just like every revolutionary imaging product that’s defined its era.
They were emphasizing it’s going to be affordable and geared towards content creators. I know $4000 is too optimistic a price but if they can keep it in the four digit range like $5000-$6000, that be amazing!
