Tap to focus on shinobi II

Dear Pixboom,

I would like to kindly ask if it is possible to use a third-party monitor, such as the Atomos Shinobi II, to control focus by touch—similarly to how it works on a Sony camera.

Additionally, I believe it would be very helpful to have full touch access to the camera’s menu via the external monitor.

Thank you very much in advance for your time and support.

Best regards

Hey CLD,

Yes, you can use any monitor with the Spark. I’ve test the camera with third party monitor at IBC and work really well.

I believe that you can use monitor assist with a dedicated Pixboom Spark app, I didn’t tried yet but I am sure will be available as many other cameras in the market :call_me_hand::call_me_hand:

I forgot to mention that you have two port connections for your existing monitors. SDI & HDMI

Thanks for the answer.

I just wanted to be sure, because I know that at the moment, tap-to-focus on the Shinobi II is only compatible with a few cameras, like some Sony and Canon models.

Since you’ve had the chance to see the prototype in person, I’d like to ask for your general impression.

I’m currently a backer on Kickstarter but, like many others, I need a better understanding of the image quality of the camera — especially when compared to (the older) competitor, the Chronos 2.1 HD. Have you had any experience with Chronos cameras?

I understand your concern.

Yes! I don’t want to romanticise too much but I have to say that the camera caught my eye since Pixboom came out in the social platforms for the first time, but having the camera in person the feeling was even better. The look and feel is something that I’ve never felt before when it comes to have the camera in your hands. Apart from that the camera is very intuitive and friendly to use. Is not as complex as operating Phantom.

I don’t have experience with Chronos but I am a Freefly user. I know that you can record 1.000fps on Chronos in HD and that has i’ts limitations as many slomo cameras like built in LCD screen, dynamic range leading to higthligth clipping  and slow boot times and save speed footage but that doesn’t means that is a bad cameras, just limitations as my Freefly wave. When I started playing with the Spark all I wanted to see was the dynamic range, the dual ISO and I have to say that the image was so clean. I think this camera has a massive advantage by being the first slow motion camera with BIS in the market for creators. Saying that, I think this is a huge improvement and the future for slow motion camera users/creators giving us the flexibility to record unlimited time, playback our footage and having hot swappable memory ssd drives for those moments were time matters.

Image quality, is unreal. I suggest to get one? Yes,100% If I decided to buy a freefly years ago just to have a dedicated camera for slow motion, why not to give a chance to a camera that is going to give me seven times or more capabilities compare with what I already have. (Records in 4K and 2K, Dynamic rage, built-in LCD screen, Pre recording functionality, chance to hot swap memory/drives with high speed ssd and fast USBC offload, new BIS, user friendly design but more important, the price :upside_down_face:)

My opinion is personal based on my experience, I’m just waiting for mine to put it in action and  push it to the limits in my field. I already can say that I made a good decision and trust on this new camera since I saw it with my own eyes.

I hope this gives you a peace of mind and is helpful for you buddy. If you already order yours, you won’t regret it. :call_me_hand::call_me_hand::call_me_hand:

@CLD Another thing to add. If you don’t have PL glass. As Sony user, you have the option to use your Sony glass in a friendly way. Spark comes with e-mount with electronic function that allows to change your iris. I test it and works really well. ( This is not related to your question about the monitor, but is a tick in the box.)

To be clear, they weren’t asking if external monitors work with the camera (obviously they do since it has SDI and HDMI outs). They were asking if the specific “tap to focus” function on the external monitor works (and further, if there is camera control using the external monitor).

Since you began with “Yes,” your reply might seem to support that “tap to focus” on the external monitor does work, but I don’t actually see you address that in any of your followup to that “Yes”.

So, just to make sure we’re talking about the same thing, does “tap to focus” work on an external monitor?

Hey @K.F.Wright. I apologise for this confusion.

@CLD Back to the topic. The spark does not support tap focus  for the Shinobi II or other external monitor but  autofocus feature is a future consideration for the Spark.

Thank you, everything is clear now. I hope this project will have a successful outcome and that I can receive the product as soon as possible. I discovered the camera and Pixboom only a week ago by accident: in fact, I was looking for my first high-speed camera and I thought the Chronos 2.1 was my only option because of my budget.

Now, however, I’m as excited as a child thanks to this Kickstarter campaign, and every day I hope we can reach the third stretch goal for the warranty extension. I want to continue supporting Pixboom’s campaign with my pledge, but I believe they should share more RAW videos so that each of us can make personal tests on DaVinci and other software.

What I’ve seen so far is amazing, but having more material would be even better.
