Hi there, creators! We’re so excited to have you here in our growing community. This thread is your space to ask us anything-seriously, we mean it! Whether it’s about our high-speed camera, our journey, or even what snacks keep us going during late-night shooting sessions (spoiler: it’s popcorn), we’re here to chat.
Not sure where to start? Here are a few ideas:
⁃ How did this idea come to life?
⁃ What’s the most surprising or unexpected part of our journey so far?
⁃ What’s the one feature we think every high-speed camera must have?
⁃ Or… what’s our favorite slow-motion scene of all time?"
We’re an open book-so whether you’re here to geek out about tech or just want to know if we prefer Godfather 1 or 2, we’d love to hear from you!* Drop your questions below, and let’s chat! We’ll be hanging out here to answer as many as we can. Ready? Go!
One thing that’s a must for a high speed camera, is the ability to use Pre-Recording in my opinion!
Do you have any plans to include Pre-Recording with your Spark?
I’d love to help you out with creating marketing material for your camera (or to serve as an extra nice Beta-Tester ), so if you’re in need of either and would like some high quality slowmo of wildlife (think about stuff like hunting sequences, or classics like kingfishers diving into the water etc), let’s chat! <3
Totally agree! Pre-Recording is such a crucial feature—I’d love to see Pixboom take this suggestion into account too, haha! I feel like there are so many creators out there who would benefit from having this option.
the ultimate request for a dream high speed camera:
Lens mount (L "Leica or Z Nikon) to be able to use PL, LPL, EF, E-Sony Lenses - Pre-Recording - Storage Speed and availability (off Shelf) - Speed in transferring the data - File Format - DR is very important
Lens Mounts
Right now, we’re supporting E-mount and PL-mount. These two cover a lot of ground, but we’re curious—are there any other mounts you’d love to see in the future? Let us know!
Pre-recording
Pre-recording is a hot topic, and we’ve heard how critical it is for capturing those perfect high-speed moments. So, here’s a question for you: How many seconds of pre-recording do you think you’d need for high frame rate photography?
Storage Solutions
We all know high frame rate footage creates massive amounts of data (you feel us, right?). To handle that, we’ve designed custom storage solutions to ensure smooth and continuous recording. That said, we’re working on making it compatible with third-party storage options down the line. However, we’ve noticed that third-party storage speeds can be a bit… underwhelming. What do you think—would you be okay with changes to recording specs if it meant better compatibility?
Export Speeds
When dealing with large files, export speed is everything. Do you think USB 3.1 bandwidth is enough, or would you prefer the faster USB 3.2? We’d love to hear your thoughts on this!
File Formats
File formats make a big difference in your workflow. What’s your go-to format, and why? We want to make sure we’re meeting your needs here.
We’re here to listen and learn from you. Your input helps us create tools that truly work for the community, so don’t hold back—share your ideas, preferences, and feedback below!
This one’s exciting! High-speed photography tends to demand higher ISO, which actually makes shooting outdoors much easier. We’ll share the exact ISO values soon, but in the meantime, what are your thoughts on this?
Yes, we totally agree—pre-recording is super important! We’d love to hear your thoughts: how many seconds of pre-recording would be ideal for you? Let us know!
And wow, it’s amazing that you’re interested in being one of our testers! Guess what? We’re planning to launch an exclusive testing program soon . We’ll be selecting a few of our most active community members to try things out before our Kickstarter launch. Stay tuned—I promise to keep you updated!
On a related note, I think adding an active locking mechanism to the E-mount would be a great improvement. It would provide better stability, particularly for video shooting, where consistent stabilization is crucial.
In my limited experience with high-speed photography (such as capturing birds, insects, and lightning), I’ve found that 2-3 seconds of pre-recording is usually enough for me to get the shot. For me, pre-recording serves as a buffer for human reaction time—just enough to cover that critical moment.
Also, I really hope you can make the Pixboom at a fraction of the cost compared to the Freefly Ember or Chronos 4K 12 at $4000. That is an affordable price for most of us. Also, I would love to be a tester if I’m sent a camera. I can compare it to my Chronos 1.4 and let you know my thoughts!
I agree Mason. Usually, I only need 2-4 second with end trigger mode enabled. This is the same limit the Sony RX10 series cameras due in their HFR mode.
Most important thing about the mount, to me, is that it’s lockable.Almost all my fast tele prime glass is EF but a strong E-mount would be fine for that. EF with electronics would be insane of course.
Pre-rec: 3 seconds seems like the minimum for the human reaction time.
But RED’s way is also pretty handy, 1st press to start the buffer, 2nd press to record inc buffer, and 3rd press to stop recording.
Also a cool option, if possible, to have a lot of vertical crop options in balance to higher framerate. Like full width but lower vertical resolution.
5. Please pretty please do PRO RES But most important of all, to me, would be the dynamic range and color science. Ember is on the lower limit of acceptable dynamic range for normal outdoor use. If it’s proper usable outdoor it would sell like hot cakes.
I was thinking too by limiting the pre record to 3 seconds, it would mean less RAM is needed by the system which could keep the camera cost down. I’m kinda iffy about weather sealing, as like you said, would increase costs. Third party systems can just make a waterproof cage for it if you really wanted to go that route.
yes but waterproof or (sort of) dust resistant is a big difference. The latter should be something to take in consideration. Really curious about the ‘content creator’ price point too. Anything cheaper than let’s say FX6 / Komodo X would be a smash hit, probably
100% would need pre-record for wildlife. Where I am filming whales especially they’re highly unpredictable. Pre record of 10-15 seconds would be super helpful. Secondly I see on a few videos that there is a V-lock mount. For outdoors stuff / wildlife what are we looking at for form factor / usability outdoors.
